Birds

The thriller birds, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, was a film made in 1963.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrN_U830_Gc

The thriller was made fast pacing to build up the tension. Hitchcock wanted us to know that there is no way we can relax during this film and there will always be something worse happening than the last time. We get frightened and feel the fear of the characters wondering why this is happen to them or what they did wrong to deserve this. this is a use of enigma as we don't know what the birds think and why they have such strong hatred among the characters.

There are many scenes where this is shown for example when the woman was on the boat and the bird flew towards her scratching her head. We didn't expect that to happen and it happened very quickly, shocking us of the event. Also when the house got attacked, Hitchcock presents us with the worst that can happen at the times we don't expect it as if he is telling us the true natures of the birds. on the other hand he could have been telling us the birds have been abused throughout history therefore they are finally getting their revenge on the humans.

However birds is different to most films, unlike the usual thriller which has a human villain who is trying to hurt people the villain in this film is the birds. This creates a sense of terror as we will never understand why the birds are doing what they're doing as they can't speak as well as if they will ever stop. therefore we were trapped into believing that there was so escape for them.

there was dramatic irony in the film for example in the schoolyard scene, Melanie does not know the birds have been gathering but the audience does. this gives us an anxious feeling as we want to worn them that they birds have lined up however we cant. we know that the bird will come after them so we sense the danger however the fact that they haven't worries us that they may severely hurt or killed. in addition, at this stage we have learnt about the character and have grown to care about them so we don't want them to get hurt as we know they're good people.

Hitchcock creates a contrast in the schoolyard scene. for example when the children are singing, they are singing an innocent song which encourages love, happiness and good, however the bird lining up outside show hatred, anger, violence and evil. Both of these are completely different creating an effect of the children are blinded and delusional and not knowing about the evil happening around them as they are too busy believing that there is only happiness and good in their world.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056869/fullcredits/ in this scene it shows the contrast, the sound in this scene which is diegetic is also being contrasted as the song they're singing is sweet and calming however when we see the images are cruel it doesn't suit the sound creating a deceiving effect as we don't know what mood to be in during this scene. another effect the song has is that it was the only music in the sequence. there was no non-diegetic music which has the effect of the film being more realistic so we believe and fear the film more.

The scene outside the cafe when they are being attacked once again the camera angle is high creating an effect of God looking down at them pitiless as if he has given up on them and is not bothered to intervene. this creates an effect of loneliness and isolation as even though there are many people around them, God who has the most power against them has given up therefore there is no hope for them...

Lastly the ending of the film is non like other films during that time, unlike most films in the 60's which concluded of a 'The End', the film birds doesn't include this, directing that there will be no end for this film as the birds are still on the hunt for their prey and there is no way out. This tells us that they are not safe and that bad will still occur to them and that we can no longer do anything about it.
