continuity editing

Continuity Editing

continuity editing retains a sense of realistic chronology and generates the feeling that time is moving forward. this may include flashbacks or flash forwards but the narrative will still be seen to be progressing forward in an expected or realistic way.

   Eye line match

This is where we see a character looking at something off screen and then we cut to a shot of what they are looking at.

 Match of action

we see a character start an action in one shot and then see them continue it in the next.

Graphic Match
when two shots are linked with a similar shape of composition of an image.

180 degree rule
this is a basic guideline that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other.

Shot reverse
shot/reverse shot is used to show conversation/ arguments.

Storyboard

story board

My story was about a boy who came up to a girl and they started speaking. even though the film was not that interesting our task was to show all our skills of editing in a short film. we began with a graphic match by zooming out  of character A's eye and zooming into the 0 on the room number we was in. This linked in to the scene as then character A walked into the room and to edit this we used a match of action. we filmed this by filming character A walk into the room and then went inside the room and filmed him coming in again. we then used an eye line match where we had a close up of him staring at character B and then a point of view shot towards character B.  we then ended the scene with a shot reverse turning the camera to the person who was talking each time until the conversation was over.

This film included Berke filming, Stephanie planning and editing leaving Ben and I to do the acting.

unknown

Unknown

Unknown is a thriller directed by Jaume Collet-Serra; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-lDfKb2SBA it is about a man who awakens from a comma, only to discover that someone has taken his identity and that no one, not even his wife, believes him. with the help of a young woman, he sets out to prove what is happening and why. overall the budget for the film was $30,000,000.

The film like other films include the main characters: a hero, a villain, a princess and a helper however it does have some characters which some films do not have like a false hero who was the man who was meant to come and help martin and save him from what is happening instead he kills the old man and tries to kill martin too.

The poster itself is an equilibrium. "Take back your life" this itself tells us the plot. This film uses todorovs theory by starting of with an equilibrium. There is then a disruption which was the suitcase and the taxi accident. after this there was another equilibrium. This is what changes the theory as todorov doesn't have another equilibrium till the end. However unknown has another equilibrium in between the film which is when he tries to find out what is happening and why. After this there is a resolution, this is when Martin finds the old man and tries to figure out who the imposter is and then lastly there is the new equilibrium.

One of the main scene was the scissor scene where martin is ties up onto one of the hospital beds and is drugged up by some man who is trying to kill him and who previously killed a nurse in front of martins eyes. the body of the nurse was near martin. The film was highlighting the scissor as it was his only way of escape. in this scene the tension was built up by the editing and the close ups of the scissors.

There was loud, fast pacing music playing during this scene building up the tension. As martin was being drugged the scene seemed blurry and dizzy in our eyes as if we were martin. the scene was fast pacing building up the moment where martin escapes. also as we knew that the person who was going to kill him was going to show up again, therefore the fast pacing scenes were almost giving him a time limit showing us that he is almost coming back.

The mcguffin in the start was martin and his wifes relationship. We almost got a sense that this could have been a romance film. Then there was then another mcguffin which was finding out why his wife didn't recognise him and who the other Martin Harris was. However we cared about weather to not if Martin will get his identity back and what is happening.

This film has the male gaze as it is like everyone is fighting for the woman. she doesn't have a major role however without her the film will not be as good. she is used by the villains as hostage to make martin believe what is happening to be true. she didn't save the day however she brought a lot of tension into the film.

During this film we experienced many emotions, at one point we were angry then said and at one stage happy. The director done this to give us the full effect and find Martin more likable which lead the emotions we felt about the film to be stronger.

Thriller opening- A history of violence

Thriller opening- A history of violence
The 2005 film; a history of violence was directed by David Cronenberg. The film begins with an equilibrium and then a problem which shows it used todorovs theory. The film consists of four main aspects: the editing, the camera work, the sound and the mise-en-scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WokcHt5UQ-M

Editing
Firstly to start wit the editing cronenberg chose to have the opening scene to be slow paced with the scenes to be around 10-20 seconds long. this helps us analyse the characters and observe their personalities' slowly getting to know them. there was some cuts during the scene around 12 during a 5-7 minute film. the cuts were jump cuts however the scenery stayed the same during the cuts. the editing is long ans slow making us feel relaxed and calm.

Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene was quite simple during the opening of this film due to the surroundings. there was a blue car and 2 men. one man was smartly suited whereas the other was wearing casual clothes. They were in front of a motel which shows that they may have been staying there for a while or visiting someone there. the surrounding were very quite and the area was deserted, this shows us some mystery as if something is going to happen. this describes the film to begin with an enigma as we have no clue who these people are and what they are doing. The film indicates that the man in black is the boss as the other man moves over to the passenger seat in the car giving the man in black total control of driving.

Building up our suspense the opening of the film introduces its first thrill being the blood on the counter and a dead body. this scares us a little as it shows a sign of danger. we still do not know if the character is good or bad so we don't know if we want him to be safe. we then see the little girl with a doll in her hand which shows she is vulnerable, she also looks lost which can be a sign of loneliness, the man pull out his gun which deters us from believing he is a good person. we are worried for the child as to us she looks innocent and now the man looks like a murderer.

Camera
The camera work consisted of a medium shot of the smartly suited man giving us an overlook of the character and basing our judgement on him from how he looks. the camera focused on the characters mainly during the opening scene giving us information about them. the camera doesn't change view while the men are in the car making us worry about what is happening around them as if they're hiding something. however when the man comes out of the car there is a close up of him as we wonder where he is going to go.
Then when we enter the motel we have a close up of the man to show his reaction when he enters the room. the camera then focuses on the blood and the dead body, showing that he may have something to do with it. There is s low angle shot of the man telling us that he is in power. then a medium shot of the girl showing us that she is on her own which shows she is in danger. lastly there is a close up of the gun which shows mass power over everything else in the room.

sound
The sound begins with off screen sound to set the film. this sound was digetic as it was the bird chirping, this gives us a calming effect as if everything is going to be alright. there is then some dialogue which tells us about the character, this is effective as we are trying to understand the characters and know who is good and who isn't.  the man then turns on the radio, which is a digetic sound as they can hear the radio too. this calms us down from any tension that has already built up. then there is more dialogue. the nature sound begins again, this shows that the film is trying to calm us down to show us that everything is going to be okay and there is nothing to worry about. the nature sound carries onto the next scene which is a sound bridge. the sound of the birds get louder indicating the isolation in the area. lastly there is creepy music which starts to play when we see the blood which tells us that danger is building up.

Thriller opening: Brick

Brick

Brick is a thriller which was made in 2005, which was directed by Rian Johnson. It is a film about a young teenager who goes out to investigate the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend.

Editing
the first edit was a pan of the scenery. the edit for this was very fast and we couldn't really understand what we were seeing. then the camera was focusing on the boy which created effects it was like he was finally coming conscious. the editing in brick was very fast, the clips were 3-5 seconds long dramatically changing from one thing to another. this creates effect as the editing matches our thoughts as we are confused to what happened and are trying to get a glimpse of everything to understand. he looked upset as if he was upset and didn't know what to do. This matched with the editing as the editing was made to confuse us as it wasn't sticking to one thing just like how he must of felt. He didn't know what to do and his mind must have been  rushing just like the short clips.

Mise- en- scene
The atmosphere is dark and gloomy, as if the film is warning us that it is going to be a dark, evil film. the area the opening scene was filmed in was damp, isolated and there was a stream. the scene looked empty as there wasn't many props around enhancing the fact that the place was isolated only involving two characters. we knew something was wrong even without the dead body as the place looked like there shouldn't be people there. when we had a close up of the two characters the boy was wearing glasses and casual clothes. he looked like he just came out of school, the girl was wearing heals and was wearing smart clothes which could indicate that she was older than him.

Camera
the camera involved a very fast pan of the scenery. we didn't see much as the editing was very fast and couldn't realise what was happening. then there was a long shot of the place the two characters where. this then dramatically changed shots to the first characters face. the camera was focusing on his face. the rest of the scene concluded with eye-line match as e had a close up of his face and then what he was looking at. at first we saw his face, then a close up of the girls shoes. then we went back to the close up of his face and then a close up of her head. then another close up of his face and then a close up of her hand. we didn't understand why those parts of the girls body was filmed however we noticed by this that she was dead.

Sound
there was no dialogue to the opening scene, we were confused to what was happening and had visually see what was happening to get an understanding of what was happening. there is unsettling music which confused us even more. it worried us as it was like a warning. it suited the atmosphere as it was dark music. the non diegetic music made us anxious as we didn't know what we were going to face and made it feel like we was in the film as we were feeling that same thing as the teenage boy.

Thriller opening: No country for old men

No country for old men

No country for old men is a thriller directed by Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, about Violence and mayhem ensue after a hunter stumbles upon a drug deal gone wrong and more than two million dollars in cash near the Rio Grande.

Editing
The editing in the film was very fast paced. everything we watched in the opening thriller happened so fast and two people were killed in the first 2 minutes of the film. however the beginning of the film, which included the nature scenes had a slow paced scenes. when the killing was happening the film became intense again.

Mise- en- scene
The films begins with a beautiful isolated scenery, it begins with pictures and videos of the nature yet no characters are shown. after this we have an enigma, the police man pushed a guy into the car and we have no idea why. they're both in the car driving to a place we have no clue to. the man is then at the police station where he is talking on the phone, at this stage the director introduces dramatic irony as we see the man who was cuffed walking up to the man yet the man can't. however there is more enigma as we don't know what he is going to do to the police man.

The guy who was cuffed was wearing dark colours like black which indicates that he is a bad character as black is usually associated with darkness and evil. however the police man was wearing light colours which could represent him being good. we then see the man killing the police man with his cuffs strangling him to death and leaving the police station. he drives his car in an isolated road where his car meets another. he comes out the car and then walks up to the man and once again we feel the suspense of the dramatic irony, as we know he is a psychotic killer yet the guy in the car doesn't, he used his oxygen tank to kill the man which was unexpected to us as we didn't expect him to be able to shoot the guy with the oxygen tank.

Camera
The opening of no country or old men begins with pans of the nature. then there was a  close up of  a man who was being cuffed and out into a police car. then there was a shot of both characters which created effect as they were contrasting from good and bad. then when we entered the police station the camera was angles at the man who was cuffed which could have been alerting us that he was going to do something wrong. then when the man was trying to kill the police man the camera was close up to the cuffs around the police mans neck and both of their faces showing their expressions. then the camera tracks the car going down an isolated road where he meets another guy eventually. the camera tracks the man walking up to the guy in the car. then there was a close up of the mans face as he was confused and when he was shot.

Sound
The film begins with a voice over which is non diegetic the person is talking about the crimes that have happened which contradicts with the beautiful scenery. however during the whole opening there was no music or not diegetic sound. all we could hear is what the characters can hear which shows a realistic effect to the film.

Thriller opening: Zodiac

Opening of thriller: Zodiac

Zodiac is a 2007 thriller directed by, David Fincher. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81fwc8i704s

Editing
The first thing that shows up on the film is that the film is based on a true story. this scares us as we know it is a thriller and therefore something bad is going to happen that really did happen. the scene was edited to be calm and relaxing,  as if we were watching a romance film. however the fireworks could indicate that there will be bad things happening. the scenes at this stage become very fast and loud indicating something bad that is going to happen. Then when the man shoots both of them the editing cuts from the characters faces showing us the how the characters feel from both points of view.

Mise-en-scene
The girl looks young, she likes to take control as she wasn't to be the one driving when the boy asks if he can. this could be reassurance to her as she doesn't want to be found by her husband so she knows if she is driving she can drive away if he is around. The boy also looks young, he acts like he doesn't want to be told what to do as he asked again to drive however he listened to her. the beginning stars of romantic, it is deceiving us to think that this is a good calm film like romance films are. They drove to a quite deserted area.

They get his by fire works by the cars that past them. this scared them into believing that they were trying to kill them. Then see a wedding ring on her hand, telling is that she is married. another car drives up we think that this person could be the husband. it then drives off however comes back again confusing and worrying us with what is going to happen. the man kills them both and we can see the terror inside the girls eyes. the man looks relentless as after he shoots again to claim that he is not going to let her get away.

Camera
There is first a wide shot of the whole city with the fireworks. The camera tracks the car driving down the road, there then is a point of view shot when they have their conversation. We don't see them talking however the other persons reaction to what has been said. we have a close up of them both as they're talking in the car, this was done to emphasize their relationship.  When the car comes there are many point of view shots to show that they're worried and scared and a close up of their face when the car leaves as a sign of relief. Then when the car comes back and once again we experience what the characters a feeling with the point of view shots and the close ups which are making us feel more terrified.

Sound
There is romantic music which is diegetic as it is playing in her car radio, it contrasts with the fireworks as they are like gun fire shots however the romantic music is calming and relaxing. there are the sounds of the cars when they go past the restaurant which slowly fades away as they enter the deserted place. there is silence there nothing but the sound of the nature.  there was a lot of dialogue in the film which  gets us to understand the characters. we then here the diegetic sound of the car. This was like an alarm to us, as it is warning the characters and us of her husband coming as now we know she is married we don't want her to be caught. We then here the gun shots of the killing and we know who the man is. there is a laud music which exaggerates and embraces the gun shot noise after he kills them to show how ruthless he is.
