unknown

Unknown

Unknown is a thriller directed by Jaume Collet-Serra; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-lDfKb2SBA it is about a man who awakens from a comma, only to discover that someone has taken his identity and that no one, not even his wife, believes him. with the help of a young woman, he sets out to prove what is happening and why. overall the budget for the film was $30,000,000.

The film like other films include the main characters: a hero, a villain, a princess and a helper however it does have some characters which some films do not have like a false hero who was the man who was meant to come and help martin and save him from what is happening instead he kills the old man and tries to kill martin too.

The poster itself is an equilibrium. "Take back your life" this itself tells us the plot. This film uses todorovs theory by starting of with an equilibrium. There is then a disruption which was the suitcase and the taxi accident. after this there was another equilibrium. This is what changes the theory as todorov doesn't have another equilibrium till the end. However unknown has another equilibrium in between the film which is when he tries to find out what is happening and why. After this there is a resolution, this is when Martin finds the old man and tries to figure out who the imposter is and then lastly there is the new equilibrium.

One of the main scene was the scissor scene where martin is ties up onto one of the hospital beds and is drugged up by some man who is trying to kill him and who previously killed a nurse in front of martins eyes. the body of the nurse was near martin. The film was highlighting the scissor as it was his only way of escape. in this scene the tension was built up by the editing and the close ups of the scissors.

There was loud, fast pacing music playing during this scene building up the tension. As martin was being drugged the scene seemed blurry and dizzy in our eyes as if we were martin. the scene was fast pacing building up the moment where martin escapes. also as we knew that the person who was going to kill him was going to show up again, therefore the fast pacing scenes were almost giving him a time limit showing us that he is almost coming back.

The mcguffin in the start was martin and his wifes relationship. We almost got a sense that this could have been a romance film. Then there was then another mcguffin which was finding out why his wife didn't recognise him and who the other Martin Harris was. However we cared about weather to not if Martin will get his identity back and what is happening.

This film has the male gaze as it is like everyone is fighting for the woman. she doesn't have a major role however without her the film will not be as good. she is used by the villains as hostage to make martin believe what is happening to be true. she didn't save the day however she brought a lot of tension into the film.

During this film we experienced many emotions, at one point we were angry then said and at one stage happy. The director done this to give us the full effect and find Martin more likable which lead the emotions we felt about the film to be stronger.
